Mice 101

86Bugs mouse enemy #1

Mice are adept at finding ways into houses, especially as winter cold sets in. Here’s how they commonly get inside Midwest homes during winter:

1. Small Cracks and Gaps

  • Mice can squeeze through openings as small as a quarter-inch, about the size of a pencil. Cracks in the foundation, gaps under doors, and spaces around utility pipes are all potential entry points.

2. Gaps Around Doors and Windows

  • Weatherstripping that’s old or damaged around doors and windows can leave small gaps that mice can exploit. Garage doors and sliding doors are particularly vulnerable.

3. Holes Around Utility Lines

  • Areas where electrical wiring, pipes, or HVAC lines enter the house often have small gaps, which mice can widen with their teeth if needed. They also find their way in through dryer vents and air vents if not properly covered.

4. Openings in the Roof and Attic

  • Damaged roofing, gaps in eaves, soffits, and chimneys, as well as unscreened attic vents, can all give mice access to attics, where they can nest and stay warm.

5. Basements and Crawl Spaces

  • Mice are drawn to dark, secluded areas, and basements or crawl spaces offer warmth and safety. Cracks or small gaps in basement windows or poorly sealed vents often provide easy access.

6. Gaps in Exterior Siding

  • Exterior cladding, especially in older homes, can sometimes pull away from the frame, creating small entry points for mice to slip through.

Tips to Keep Mice Out:

  • Seal gaps and cracks with caulk or steel wool.
  • Install door sweeps on exterior doors, especially in garages.
  • Maintain weatherstripping and replace any damaged or worn areas around doors and windows.
  • Cover vents and chimneys with mesh screens.
  • Inspect utility entry points and seal any gaps around pipes and cables.
  • Keep food sealed and minimize clutter, especially in basements, garages, and attics.

Regular inspection and preventative sealing around these areas can make it much harder for mice to get in during winter months.
