Pigeons

8Bugs Feral Pigeon deterrent products are effective, affordable and humane methods to keep pigeons off your property.

Pest pigeons are the number one pest bird in our cities across the nation. They cause building owners thousands of dollars each year in cleanup and damage costs. How to get rid of pigeons from your building will involve some sort of pigeon control system.

The Feral Pigeon

Pigeons are generally gray with slightly iridescent feathers on the neck that shine pink and green in the sunlight. A pigeon’s average life span is 3-5 years in the wild. Pigeons are descended from the rock dove, which nested, on cliffs; domesticated birds founded feral populations across the globe. Because of their ancestry, the pigeons found in our cities find our buildings ideal sites to land, roost and nest. Our city buildings provide the birds with shelter, protection from predators and a food source (often handed to them by those who love to feed the birds).

Why Pigeon Control?

Pigeons can cause a great deal of damage to a building or structure as well as carry any of 60-transmittable diseases. When the birds decide to take residence on your building or structure, they leave behind their feces, which is very acidic and will quickly erode building materials. There have been several cases where structures have collapsed due to the build-up of pigeon droppings, making it a dangerous situation for those nearby. When pigeon droppings are left to dry near building A.C. units and vents, the dry particles may be pulled into building ventilation and inhaled by those working in the building; this can lead to serious illness.

How to Keep Pigeons Away

There are many humane options for deterring pigeons from landing or nesting. It is important to do a good cleanup of any bird droppings or nesting materials before any product is installed.

Habitat Modification

  1. Install pigeon control products such as pigeon spikes or bird netting to block pigeons form getting back to the area they have chosen to roost, perch or nest. If you make affected areas inaccessible, the pigeons will be forced to move on to a new location.
  2. Physical pigeon control products like pigeon spikes are effective on ledges, beams, signs, windowsills, rooflines and other areas pigeons have decided to land.
  3. Electric track systems are ideal for treating ledges and rooflines or anywhere aesthetics are a concern.

Scare Tactics

Pigeons have a heightened sense of their environment. If you appeal to their senses such as sight and sound, you can effectively scare pigeons away from your property using pigeon deterrents like the Solar Sonic noise makers or Reflective Bird Diverters.

1. Enhanced Visibility for Inspections
- Bright lighting improves visibility, making it easier to spot signs of pest activity, such as droppings, nests, chew marks, or even the pests themselves. This can help in early detection and prompt response.

2. Reduced Hiding Spots
- Pests often prefer dark, secluded areas. Bright, well-lit spaces reduce the number of areas where pests feel comfortable hiding or nesting. They are less likely to inhabit well-lit zones, choosing darker, less visible spots instead, which can then be targeted in pest control measures.

3. Deterrent for Some Nocturnal Pests
- Many pests, such as rodents, cockroaches, and some insects, are nocturnal and tend to avoid lighted areas. Brighter lighting can disrupt their normal behavior and discourage them from entering or moving through areas that are constantly illuminated.

4. Supports Security Cameras and Monitoring Tools
- For facilities with surveillance cameras or pest monitoring devices, brighter lighting improves camera footage quality. This can help staff quickly identify and respond to pest activity in real-time or review footage for signs of problems.

5. Improved Sanitation and Cleanliness
- Brighter lighting also helps employees and cleaning staff identify areas that need cleaning, ensuring spills, food debris, and waste are properly managed.
